Your WYD duty: Archbishop’s letter to past pilgrims

Archbishop Fisher has called on Sydney pilgrims who attended World Youth Day to spread word of the event

Dear former pilgrim,

I send you my warmest greetings.

It has now been over two years since we gathered with Pope Francis on the beach in Copacabana, along with three million other young people, to continue the great mission of St John Paul II, it was his sincere love for young people which began the World Youth Day celebration.

I pray that the Lord has been at work in your life since World Youth Day, and that you are continuing to respond to the World Youth Day theme to, “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Mt 28:19).

At the invitation of Pope Francis, we now look forward to a unique World Youth Day in 2016 in Krakow, Poland, the home of St John Paul II, the father of World Youth Days. Poland is a deeply cultural and spiritual land, rich in history. The places we visit will invite us into the theme of mercy, expressing God’s love for humanity. The archdiocese of Sydney has four pilgrimage options available, all of which come together in Krakow in July of 2016.

I want to encourage you to invite a friend or someone who you think will benefit from this opportunity to consider joining us in 2016 (it would be wonderful if you were able to join us as well).

As someone who has a first-hand experience of World Youth Day, you have a unique part to play in the World Youth Day phenomenon, it is now your duty to share your story and encourage others to experience for themselves the great grace that participating in a World Youth Day can bring.

World Youth Day 2016 will certainly be a great opportunity to encounter Christ in ways that will be very different to Rio. We will be exposed to a nation that has held the Christian faith in its heart through immense sufferings, and we will have the joy of being at this World Youth Day during the Jubilee Year of Mercy called for by Pope Francis.

The World Youth Day theme, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” (Mt 5:7), certainly fits well with the Year of Mercy.

God bless you.
