What is the party’s position on the current prohibition against euthanasia and assisted suicide in NSW?

The Christian Democratic Party believes God is the author of life and that human life originates at conception and should be protected, respected and valued at all ages.

The Christian Democratic Party will fight for Christian values and believe in the importance of quality palliative care as an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problem associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual.

In November 2017, a bill to legalise euthanasia and assisted suicide was introduced to the NSW Upper House. This Bill was voted down 20 to 19. One single vote could have allowed precious individuals, when they are at their most vulnerable, to terminate their life. The Christian Democratic Party holds the balance of power the NSW Upper House and successfully uses this balance of prayer and responsibility to ensure life is protected at all stage.

The NSW Government does not currently intend to introduce reforms relating to euthanasia or assisted dying.

Should a private member’s bill be introduced to the NSW Parliament regarding these matters, Government Members would be given a conscience vote.

The AJP supports voluntary euthanasia with appropriate safeguards to ensure that the choice is free and well informed. This choice should only be available when a person is diagnosed with a disease, illness or medical condition that is incurable, advanced, progressive and will cause death; and is experiencing suffering that cannot be relieved in a manner that the person considers tolerable.

The Greens support legalising euthanasia and assisted suicide in NSW with essential checks and balances.

We are supportive of the current prohibition against euthanasia and assisted suicide.

On the issue of Abortion and Euthanasia, the party has always believed in a conscience vote on these matters by individual party members.

This is a conscience vote in our party and like most other parties, our candidates hold a variety of views.
