| Why a much loved priest is still not the retiring type 18 July, 2010 |
|
Father Len Wholohan was born on December 30, 1922. The name Lindsley was given by his father who saw the name on the entrance of a property in the Mulgoa district and liked the sound of the name. At his Baptism the assistant priest at St Patrick’s Church in Lithgow, Fr Dempsey, told the parents of baby Lindsley that there was no saint with that name in the calendar of saints, but there was a James so they all agreed that the second name “James” would cover the problem. Over the years the name Lindsley, broken down to Lin, eventually became Len and so it has remained for the major part of his life. [More] |

| The changing role of parents in Catholic education in NSW 21 March, 2010 |
THIS series by Dr NANCE MILLAR is from a doctoral thesis based on historical, sociological and cultural research of the parent role and contribution to Catholic education. It tells of how it became such an enduring structural part of the Catholic Church and how it was sustained. The themes of the story are centred on how the situation was, why it was so, how and why it changed. The school community has been likened to a drama, in which there are players with different roles. In this ‘drama’ who were the main ‘players’ and what were their roles?
It was a story of heroic struggle, bringing together, not only religious teachers and priests, but parents who dearly wanted a Catholic education for their children. It portrays the nature of the ‘Catholic community’ which coalesced the values of fidelity, trust, persistence, hardship, sacrifice, dedication, celebration and hopes for the future. It is the first, original study of the parent role in their children’s Catholic education in NSW over this period. [More] |
