THE parish of Cobar in western NSW has celebrated the centenary of its Church of St Laurence O’Toole with a special Mass and dinner.

The celebrations were part of the annual Festival of the Miner’s Ghost program which is held on the last week in October each year.

More than 230 people attended the centenary dinner at the Memorial Services Club on Saturday, October 27.

“Some people hadn’t been back to Cobar in many years so it was a great reunion of sorts,” said parishioner John Collins.

Bishop Chris Toohey, the Bishop of Wilcannia-Forbes, was the principal celebrant at the Centenary Mass the following morning.

Concelebrating with Bishop Toohey were PP Fr Paul Finucane and Fr Bernard King, a former Cobar PP.

The church was opened on October 28, 1907, by Archbishop Michael Kelly.

Mr Collins said the parish priest most responsible for the building was Fr John Joseph Hughes.
