Cardinal Edward Cassidy, former president of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, has been recognised by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for his role in building interfaith relations across the world.
Elder Paul K Sybrowsky, presiding authority for the Mormon Church in Australia, presented Cardinal Cassidy with the ‘John Simpson Standing for Something’ award to honour “his heroic efforts to bring better understanding to the peoples of the world”.
“Latter-day Saints have seen that Cardinal Cassidy is indeed a man filled with faith and courage to help make this a better world for all to live in,” Elder Sybrowsky said.
Over many years, Cardinal Cassidy has hosted leaders and representatives of the world religions in conferences and personal visits, to seek out ways for members of various persuasions to coexist in respectful peace, while not surrendering their own faith traditions.
In a message of congratulations, Premier Morris Iemma said that “no Australian has risen to greater eminence in the Catholic Church, and none has been such a devoted servant of the cause of ecumenism and inter-faith dialogue”. He praised the vision and generosity of spirit of the Mormons in honouring Cardinal Cassidy, “thus upholding the very values he has worked so hard to promote”.
