Centenary a time for celebration

IT’S time to celebrate”, said Br Vincent Keating, auxiliary provincial who has spent the past eight months supervising the organisation of the upcoming centenary events. “The centenary events are an opportunity for everyone to celebrate the contribution of the De La Salle Brothers and their associates over the past 100 years and to renew the Lasallian spirit to continue this contribution,” her said.

The first event planned in Sydney is the Centenary Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral on Friday May 26 at 10.15am.

“Primarily the Mass is an opportunity for the students and staff from the De La Salle schools in Sydney to celebrate,” said Br Vincent.

The De La Salle Brothers will join the students and staff representatives from each of the schools. A highlight of the celebration will be a student drama performance on the life of St John Baptist de La Salle.

After the Mass, the staff and students of Oakhill College, Castle Hill will celebrate their annual Founder’s Day enjoying a “parade” of Tall Ships and Ferries on Sydney Harbour.

The gala event of the centenary is the Centenary Celebration Ball on Saturday, July 15, at the Westin Hotel, Sydney.

“The ball will be a great occasion for a gathering of former students, staff, Brothers, partners, parents, friends and associates of the De La Salle Brothers to celebrate and honour what has gone before”, said Brother Vincent.

The response to requests of former students to participate at the ball demonstrates an appreciation of the Brothers. Former student of De La Salle College Bankstown, Paul Keating, Prime Minister from 1991 to 1996, is special guest speaker. The master of ceremonies is Mike Bailey, ABC TV and radio presenter, who attended school at De La Salle College Bankstown and Ashfield.

Memories will be relived at the ball through a presentation of photographs illustrating the history of the De La Salle Brothers in Australia.

“Brother Geoff Kennewell has gathered a range of photographs which will guarantee to stir the memories, provide a laugh and maybe even a tear,” said Br Vincent.

Tickets to the ball cost $120 per person which includes a three-course meal, soft drinks, wine, beer and entertainment. To purchase tickets www.delasalle.org.au or phone (08) 9386 3292.
