Pancakes, Mass at start of 40-day abortion vigil
Printable version
10 February, 2013
The 40 Days for Life pro-life Lenten campaign begins on Shrove Tuesday, 12 February, with more than 2000 pancakes to be consumed by the hundreds of people expected to gather in the courtyard at St Peters Church, Surry Hills.

“Each year the launch gets bigger and so does the pancake production,” said Maria Campos, events and recruitment co-ordinator.

40 Days for Life is a non-stop pro-life vigil in which participants fast and pray for an end to abortion.

“Babies whose fate was destruction by the hands of the abortionist are saved from this sorrowful end, and in time received by the profoundly thankful hands of the mother,” said campaign director Paul Hanrahan.

“Not one has been sorry they changed their minds and kept their child. For this to happen, though, it requires a change of heart towards God and this is the great mission of prayer on the street for 14 hours each day for 40 days non-stop.”

A booklet of prayers, readings, litanies and hymns is used by everyone praying on the street.

No one is forgotten in the prayers with not only the babies and parents being prayed for, but also abortionists and medical staff, politicians, teachers and the rest of society.

Bishop Julian Porteous, patron of the campaign, has written a letter of invitation to “encourage all those who are new to 40 Days for Life to make a special Lenten commitment, to become involved in this great prayer to change hearts and save lives”.

40 Days for Life will begin with Mass at St Peter’s at 6pm on Tuesday, followed by a candlelight procession, Benediction and pancakes.

From Ash Wednesday, 13 February, until Palm Sunday, March 24, people will pray daily from 6am-8pm at the corner of Elizabeth & Randle Sts, Surry Hills.
