Relic visit ‘a blessing for the Year of Grace’

16 December, 2012
VENERATION: Sr Anthony Mary Diago rsm from the Vocation Centre prays before the relic in the Polding Centre chapel.
The relic of St Francis Xavier which toured Australia on a Pilgrimage of Grace has been a blessing for the Year of Grace, says Bishop Peter Comensoli, auxiliary bishop of Sydney.

Bishop Comensoli estimates tens of thousands of Australians venerated the relic, the forearm of the missionary saint, as it travelled “a lot of kilometres”.

“Right around the country, in the big cities and in the cathedrals and in big parish churches through to tiny little places in the middle of rural Australia and Outback Australia, people responded very, very positively and with great devotion,” he said.

“It’s been a great blessing for the Year of Grace. For many people this has been a
special moment of grace in their lives, and that was particularly evident for me with the prayer wall on the website.

“Hundreds and hundreds of prayers were offered, and people were clearly touched by the presence of the relic.”

The last stop on the relic’s journey was Mass in the Polding Centre chapel, celebrated by Fr Richard Shortall SJ, the principal guardian of the relic in Australia.
