A small corner of St Patrick’s Church in the Rocks has become a significant part of the Marist Fathers’ preparation of a cause for the beatification of their founder, Venerable Fr Jean-Claude Colin. It’s a display area for the cause and labelled, in characteristic Australian vernacular, “Colin Corner”.
An Italian Marist in Rome has been appointed Postulator for the cause, and a great deal of preliminary work has been given to the Australian Marist Fathers’ province, centred on its community at Hunters Hill and in particular St Patrick’s, the church and parish the Marists have administered since 1868.
St Patrick’s parish priest, Fr Ray Chapman SM, says that St Pat’s is unique; hence the significance of Colin Corner.
“The congregation reflects the Australian ‘melting pot’,” he said. “There are more than 40 languages spoken by people attending St Patrick’s and although the 19th century parish may have vanished, people come to Mass here, not just from the local area, but from all over Sydney and its surrounds and the central and near-south coasts.
“And it’s a regular destination for visitors from interstate and the bush.
Colin Corner will feature devotional material, including amini-biography of Fr Colin and a prayer for his beatification, “and because of the people who attend St Patrick’s the leaflets will be printed in the 40 languages our congregations use”, says Fr Chapman.
Fr Ron Nissen SM has been asked to develop resources to promote the cause, including a website dedicated to Jean-Claude Colin.
