The Archbishop of Sydney, George Cardinal Pell, has been named a member of the Synod of Bishops to explore the New Evangelisation for the Transmission of the Christian Faith next month.
Cardinal Pell will join 35 cardinals, bishops and priests who have been appointed by Pope Benedict XVI, including the prelate of Opus Dei, Bishop Javier Echevarria Rodriguez; president of the Communion and Liberation movement, Fr Julian Carron; and the superiors general of the Camillians, the Schonstatt Fathers and the Carmelites.
More than 200 members elected by national bishops’ conferences, Vatican offices, or the Union of Superiors General will also attend the synod, along with lay experts and auditors.
The gathering will be held at the Vatican from 7-28 October, and will include the launch of the Year of Faith on 11 October.
