Maureen: a pearl of great price

MAUREEN Power is no stranger to Catholic students in state schools.

In fact for 75 years Maureen, 92, has served as a catechist for the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) ... and she’s still active in the role!

At the end of last week’s annual CCD Mass, celebrated at St Mary’s Cathedral by Bishop Terry Brady, Maureen received a special award to mark those 75 years of service, 67 of them spent in her parish of St Brigid’s, Marrickville.

The new award tops off what she has already earned – the Cardinal Freeman Medal for 25 years of service, an award for 30 years service, the Cardinal Gilroy Award for 40 years of service and a Papal Cross for 70 years’ service; as well she received a secular honour – the International Year of the Volunteer Award.

The director of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine in the Archdiocese, Robert Haddad, told the congregation Maureen was a boundless source of vitality and energy. “She has communicated the faith as much by her example and her loving and caring nature as by her teaching,” he said.

“St Brigid’s, Marrickville is blessed to have Maureen in their parish for all the incredible work she has done. She truly is a ‘pearl of great price’,” Mr Haddad said.

Bishop Brady concelebrated the catechists’ annual Mass with a 11 other priests representing a cross section of Sydney’s parishes and a glimpse of the wide range of the CCD’s catechist work.

Maureen was special guest at a reception after Mass during which she cut a cake made in her honour.
