Joey’s rower follows in parents’ wake

Rower Toby Dankbaar proudly wears the blisters on his hands as a badge of honour. “They bled and hurt, but it’s all part of the sport,” he says.

Toby and his close friend and schoolmate Justin Medcraft have been selected in the Australian coxed four to race in the world junior rowing championships in Banyoles, Spain, in July.

Both are in Year 12 at St Joseph’s College, Hunters Hill.

Toby says being selected to represent his country makes the blisters, the 5.30am training sessions and the many hours spent in the gym all worth it.

“I enjoy the environment of rowing,” he says, “the mateship and pushing yourself to the limit.
