‘Fair go’ for E Timor

By Chris Lindsay

The Christian Brothers have called for East Timor to be given a “fair and just” share of the revenue from the Timor Sea oil and gas fields.

The provincial of the order in NSW and the ACT, Br Laurie Needham, has told Prime Minister John Howard in a letter: “Australia enjoys one of the highest standards of living in the world and can afford to offer billions of dollars in tax cuts, mainly for the better-off taxpayers.

“On the other hand East Timor, our near neighbour, is currently one of the poorest countries in the world, with most of the population lacking the basic necessities of life.

“I am also deeply disappointed that in the recent federal budget brought down by your government, aid for East Timor has been reduced.”

Br Laurie said East Timor “desperately needs revenues from the Timor Sea oil and gas reserves”.
