Pitter Patter: From one new mum to a bunch of others

Marilyn Rodrigues, one of our journalists, has just given birth to her first child. Just as we followed the progress of her pregnancy in Pregnant pause, so we shall follow the family’s life with baby Naomi Thérèse in this new diary.

The front room in the red brick cottage was so chockers with new four-wheel drive prams that the latecomers had trouble getting through the doorway.

Finally, 11 women sat, each with a baby on her lap, busily rocking, patting or feeding.

Because I had had such little experience with babies in the years BN (before Naomi) I found the first few minutes of the mothers’ group at the local early childhood health centre surreal.

I’d got used to one. Now I was sardined in with a whole bunch of her peers.

But, as I expected, the common denominator meant there was lots to talk about.
