Warm welcome for the ‘local’ Cardinal

HOMECOMING: Cardinal Pell celebrates Mass in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Ballarat.

CARDINAL George Pell was welcomed by thousands of Ballarat people during his first visit to his hometown since his elevation to the Sacred College of Cardinals last October.

It was the first time a Ballarat priest has returned to the city as a cardinal.

“It’s a chance for me just to come back and say thank you to all of the people to whom I owe so much,” Cardinal Pell told the Ballarat Courier.

“I am grateful that they are prepared to welcome me back. I have got very fond memories of working in Ballarat.

“I am very proud to have been born and educated in Ballarat.”
