Chinese Community raises $40,000 for altar

The Chinese Catholic Community has raised more than $40,000 to go towards a new altar at St Mary’s Cathedral.

This includes more than $15,000 raised in an auction and “sponsorship for singing” at a function attended by the Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell, Bishop Julian Porteous and 400 other guests.

Cardinal Pell spoke of the hardships faced by the early settlers, who, though only few in number, were able to build the first cathedral.

He also drew the prize-winning tickets in a raffle, which contributed significantly to the amount raised for the altar. Prizes included return air fares to Hong Kong and Melbourne.

MLC Dr Peter Wong presented the cardinal with an inscribed Chinese calligraphy, a translation of the 23rd Psalm.
