Club has great tradition of service and facilities

HEART OF THE CITY: The Catholic Club is easy to find at 199 Castlereagh Street in the CBD.

By CHRIS LINDSAY

Australia’s oldest Catholic Club has great new facilities and one of Sydney’s finest (and cheapest) gymnasiums.

The Catholic Club, in Castlereagh Street near the corner of Park Street, is one of the Sydney’s Catholic community’s best kept secrets (though, of course, it is open to anyone to join).

With about 5000 members, the club has all the expected facilities: a function room, dining room, bistro, snooker room, bottle shop and bars – all in excellent condition in its relatively new building.

But for those who like to work up a thirst, the highlight is the gym.

At $495 a year plus a joining fee of $110 the gym is sensational value. It has a large laps pool, free weights, exercise machines, aerobic machines, sauna and spa.
