St Patrick’s College proud of $5m makeover

HISTORIC DAY: Bishop Cremin at the opening with Fr John Sullivan PP, Karly Small, school captain, Raphael Ip, school captain, Meg Day, vice-captain, Ms Garvan, principal, Br Kelvin Canavan and Simon Cook, vice captain.

At the official blessing and opening of St Patrick’s College, Sutherland’s new and refurbished school facilities on May 6, Bishop David Cremin encouraged the students to be ambassadors of hope, freedom, truth and integrity.

He also encouraged the students to be risk takers. “Many people say ‘be careful, be careful’ but I’m inclined to say ‘for God’s sake take a few risks’,” Bishop Cremin said.

“To try is to risk failure, to love is to risk not being loved in return. But we must risk, because the greatest hazard is to risk nothing. We may avoid suffering, but we cannot learn, feel, change and grow if we don’t risk.”

The new and refurbished facilities at St Patrick’s College were completed over a five year period at a cost of nearly $5 million. The new facilities include: New science and creative arts rooms, central staff study and common room, multipurpose hall, upgraded fire safety egress and access, formal entrance, amphitheatre, student passive space, staff car park, wet weather covered walkway, safe stepped access and ramps for disabled students, bus bay and associated road works in President Avenue, fencing of the college boundary and library refurbishment.

Official guests attending the opening included parish priest Fr John Sullivan, Br Kelvin Canavan, Peter Turner, regional director, CEO Sydney, Br Paul Hannigan CFC, Sr Lynne Crilley PBVM, Sr Cecilia Wiltshire PBVM, Deanna Schreiber and Michael Egan, NSW treasurer – the first student enrolled at Christian Brothers’ College, Sutherland in 1956.
