Caritas way towards a better life

Mumbere Geoffrey

Mumbere Geoffrey, a 13-year-old boy from Uganda, features in this year’s Project Compassion campaign standing with his parents in the family’s pineapple garden.

The family is from a poverty-stricken part of Uganda, finally reclaimed from rebel forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2000.

The invasion of the rebels had seriously disrupted food production and other aspects of life.

Today, like other parts of Uganda and Africa, the region is being devastated by a new menace, the AIDS virus.

The Geoffrey family has been able to grow its pineapples and keep a Saanen dairy goat, which produces a high milk yield, under an arrangement with the Caritas Australia-funded Sustainable Agriculture Program.

The program teaches techniques in farming which have enabled the Geoffreys to double their pineapple crop and put a little money aside to fund Mumbere’s education.

Mumbere is also receiving scholarship materials through Caritas Australia.

“Caritas has improved our food with milk and our education with exercise books,” says the young man.

His father adds: “And his performance in class has improved.”

Your donation to Project Compassion will support this vital program as it continues to restore hope and harmony in communities like Mumbere’s. Just call 1800 024 413 or visit www.caritas.org.au
