Ashen start to Lenten journey

ASH WEDNESDAY: Zack Zenere and Lauren Dogherty of St Joseph's School, Oatley, were among thousands of Catholic schoolchildren who received ashes in school liturgies and parish Masses on Ash Wednesday. Churches also reported good attendances by parishioners keen to mark the beginning of the Lenten season with the traditional blessing of the ashes. The distribution of ashes is said to have come from a devotional imitation of the practice observed in early times by public penitents.       Photo: Suzanne Lowe
