Hurley and burly on the playing field
Gaelic
football
Men’s and women’s Gaelic football and hurling are played in Sydney, organised
by the Gaelic Football and Hurling Association of Australasia (formerly
Gaelic Athletic Association of Australasia).
Irish ex-pats and Irish backpackers dominate the hurling and men’s football
while the women’s football has seen a growth in the number of non-Irish
participating in the sport.
There are currently eight clubs in Sydney.
Gaelic games in NSW take place on Sundays at Princes Park, Auburn, and
each year the Australasian championships take place in October, in a different
state.
Anne-Marie Dargan, spokes woman for the association, says the sports
are very popular.
