Push for more Latin studies
By Marilyn Rodrigues
Sydney’s seminarians are learning more Latin than before, says Bishop Julian Porteous, and – in response to prompting from the Vatican – it may become an even larger part of their studies.
The Congregation for Catholic Education is preparing a document on Latin in the Church and the teaching of Latin in seminaries, in which bishops may be asked to do more to encourage its use.
Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski, prefect of the congregation, says: “In order not to mutilate herself, the Church cannot fail to conserve her tradition and patrimony written in Latin.”
Latin remains the official language of the Roman Church, he says, and the language of the official documents of the magisterium, so the Church needs priests who are familiar with it.
Bishop Porteous, who is the rector of the Good Shepherd Seminary, Homebush, says there is already a general movement to place more emphasis on the teaching of Latin in seminaries, indicated to bishops last year in a letter from Cardinal Grocholewski.
