Pill move ‘mistake’: Cardinal

Pharmacists should not be coerced into selling the “morning-after pill” against their better judgment, says the Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell.

The decision by the Therapeutic Goods Administration to make the drug Postinor-2 available over the counter was a “mistake”, he said.

And there were serious reasons why no pharmacists should feel pressured or be compelled to sell the morning-after pill.

Cardinal Pell said pharmacists should not be expected to be “complicit in social irresponsibility”.

There were both physical and psychological risks involved with taking the drug.

“It may interact with other drugs and it is associated with a slightly increased risk of ectopic pregnancy,” he said. “There are also psychological risks to under-age girls and to women who use the morning-after pill regularly.”
