Weeping statues, crucifixes – Brisbane church inquiry

INVESTIGATION: Vietnamese chaplain Fr Joseph Nguyen Thanh Liem with the statue of Our Lady which started weeping rose-scented tears.

ARCHBISHOP John Bathersby of Brisbane has announced an investigation into reports of weeping and bleeding religious statues, pictures and crucifixes after thousands of people started flocking to witness the strange phenomena at the Vietnamese Catholic Centre at Inala, in the city’s west.

A 60cm tall statue of Our Lady at the centre began shedding rose-scented tears on May 13, the feast of Our Lady of Fatima.

Since then, other events have been reported by the Vietnamese community in Inala.

Other statues and pictures that have been placed around the original statue have started oozing the rose-scented oil, a number of people have said they saw a crucifix pulsating and others have reported healings.

Vietnamese chaplain Fr Joseph Nguyen Thanh Liem said the plaster statue of Our Lady had been bought five weeks earlier from Christian Supplies in Brisbane.
