Bishops applaud law on marriage

By Chris Lindsay

The Church has welcomed the Federal Government’s move to legislate to strengthen the institution of marriage by restricting it to unions between a man and a woman.

The action, which is backed by the Labor Party, is “a welcome affirmation of the special nature of marriage between a man and a woman”, says Bishop Eugene Hurley, chairman of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference Committee for the Family and for Life.

Cardinal George Pell has also welcomed the move.

Bishop Hurley says the new laws are a sensible safeguarding of one of society’s strongest institutions.

“The commitment of men and women in the institution of marriage and their openness to children is the basis of every society,” he said. “There are many different relationships in our society. We cannot give them all the same special and sacred status as marriage between a man and woman.
