Pregnant pause: First all-night ‘wake up’ call of baby acrobatics

Marilyn, one of our journalists, is pregnant with her first child. We are following the progress of the fledgling Rodrigues family as she keeps a diary of her pregnancy for The Catholic Weekly. This is the 13th entry

Last night was the first time I have been kept awake by the baby’s acrobatics; which was kind of sweet at the same time that it was annoying.

I was sorry for myself, but glad that at least the baby seemed to be having a cracking good time.

I know this little bit of tiredness is nothing compared with what’s to come once he or she is out in the world with us.

And that’s not far off now.

We’ve seen 34 weeks slip by already and we’re wondering where the time has gone. Our friends have already had their babies, a little girl and a boy.

It’s hard to believe that in as little as a month we could also be at home with our little one and life will never be the same again.

The cot is ready, and we have most of the other bigger items we will need as well, courtesy of my little sister who’s long outgrown them.

I’m impatient for the time to hurry up, but then I remember that we should be making the most of every pre-parent day, too, which we try to do.

That means we’ve been going to the movies, visiting and having people over (including on weeknights), taking long walks and planning picnics and parties.

This is all great, but it inevitably makes for some late nights.

Now who was I blaming for feeling tired again?
