‘Outstanding’ approach to teaching

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, an innovative approach to teaching children about the Catholic faith, is “outstanding”, says parish priest Fr Martin Maunsell.

It uses solid modern educational techniques to convey the Gospel message, he says.

It differs from existing religious education programs in that it uses no catechetical texts and operates outside the school classroom.

Instead, a room or atrium is used which has a range of hands-on materials designed to draw children into prayer and reflection on the scriptures and liturgy.

Fr Martin is parish priest at St Michael’s, Lane Cove, which is supporting St Ignatius’ College, Riverview, in its setting up of an ‘atrium’, the prepared environment where the catechesis will take place.

A training course for interested parishes will begin on the weekend of March 27-28 and run for one weekend per term over 18 months. The cost is $80 per weekend.

St Ignatius College will host an information evening on Friday, February 20. Cost is $10.
