First PNG Michaelites

Cardinal George Pell was principal celebrant at the profession Mass of the first two Papua New Guinean members of the Congregation of St Michael the Archangel (Michaelites).

[Michaelite missionaries have been working in Papua New Guinea highlands for 30 years.]

During a vigil Mass at Holy Spirit Church, North Ryde, the novice master, Fr Stan Kluk, presented Br Thomas Lasen and Br Roy Cornelius, who pronounced one-year vows before Fr Janusz Bieniek, regional superior of the congregation.

The newly-professed are from the provinces of Enga and Mendi whose people have only been exposed to Christianity for 50 years.

Br Thomas is a lay brother who will share the work of the Michaelite priests. Br Roy, who is preparing to be ordained a deacon and a priest, has spent three years in Good Shepherd College, Banz, a major seminary in the highlands.

In 2002 he came to Sydney where he has been studying at the Catholic Institute of Sydney and Good Shepherd Seminary, Homebush.

Polish priest, Fr Bronislaus Markiewicz, established the congregation in the late 19th century. It was formally constituted by the Archbishop of Cracow in 1921.

Michaelites serve in many countries, including Australia where they administer the parishes of Holy Spirit, North Ryde, and Our Lady of the Rosary, Wyoming.
