Lay Catholics

FORMER MP: Ros Kelly

Lay Catholics honoured in the Australia Day Honours this year include:

Joan Paroissien of Mitcham, South Australia, Medal of the Order of Australia, for service to nursing as an administrator, and to the community through the Order of St Lazarus;

Michael Janes of Mount Waverley, Victoria, Medal of the Order of Australia, for service to the community, particularly through the Vision Australia Foundation, and his involvement with the Catholic Church;

Dr Margaret O'Flynn-Keaney of Kaleen, ACT, Member of the Order of Australia, for service to medicine, particularly through establishment and development of the emergency department at Calvary Hospital, Canberra;

Roslyn Kelly, former Federal MP, Officer of the Order of Australia, for service to the community through promoting corporate environmental responsibility and fostering dialogue between business and conservation groups, to the Australian Parliament and to women's health. Ros Kelly served variously as Minister for the Arts, Environment, Sports, Territories, Defence, Science and Telecommunications and Aviation before retiring from politics in 1995.

Brisbane Broncos coach Wayne Bennett has been made a Member of the Order of Australia for his service to rugby league and to the community.

His community service includes acting as a motivational speaker for charitable organisations and drug rehabilitation centres, and being a personal mentor for disadvantaged youth and people with behavioural difficulties.

Wayne Bennett has been director of coaching for rugby league at the Queensland Academy of Sport since 2001.

He has been a board member of the Australian Rugby League Foundation since 1998.

Bennett, who has been a successful Queensland State of Origin coach, received a ‘Queensland Great’ award in 2002.

He is an old boy of St Joseph’s College, a Christian Brothers school in Brisbane.
