| Parents urged to read new books The Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell, has urged parents of Catholic school students to become familiar with the new religious education textbooks, To Know, Worship and Love. In a letter to parents and guardians of students from Years 3 to 10, the cardinal recommended they thoroughly read the new series of textbooks to help them contribute to their children’s religious education. “They are intended to complement the work of parents and parish in nurturing the life-long process of religious education and faith development for each person,” the cardinal said. “It is my great hope that the background they provide will act as a stimulus for discussion in the home, encouraging an ongoing discovery of faith between parents and children. “In religious education it is important for the home, parish and school to work together. There are many opportunities for young people today, but also many new pressures. They need to build principles of faith and morals. “These texts will introduce them to the story of Jesus and his basic teachings and explain why we believe these truths.” The cardinal said that for many reasons the teaching of religion has become more difficult through the past decades. “Young people are growing up in a world that often confronts them with messages and images that contradict the Christian ideals of truth, justice, forgiveness and hope,” he said. “They need our help and love.” The cardinal launched the new textbooks and Religious Education curriculum in St Mary’s Cathedral in December.
