| Fire in Genesian roof, so show must go off
HEAT OF THE NIGHT: Fire burnt a hole in the roof (above) of the Genesian Theatre. By Chris Lindsay Fire has damaged the Genesian Theatre, in the former Church of St John the Evangelist in Kent St, Sydney. A metre-wide hole has been burnt through the roof and the historic stained glass windows installed when the church was opened in 1868 have been damaged, but may be able to be repaired. The final performance of the current play, Relative Values by Noel Coward has been cancelled and the performances of the next play, The Lion in Winter, by James Goldman, have been suspended for at least two weeks until the theatre has been repaired. The Genesian Theatre, which was established 60 years ago, has been in the Kent St building for 50 years. Grant Fraser, head of maintenance and technical equipment at the theatre, said City Council parking officers alerted the fire brigade after they noticed smoke coming from the back of the building about 8pm on Tuesday, August 10.
