‘Auntie Paul’ – Mercy’s mistress of the Mater

‘AUNTIE PAUL’: Sr Paul Geary RSM

By Marilyn Rodrigues

“I wasn’t well last year,” says 89-year old Mercy Sr Cecily Geary. “When Maria handed this book to me, it was a wonderful feeling that I had lived to see it accomplished.

“It’s amazing when you start to do something and the Lord wants it done, he brings someone along to help you.”

That “someone” was Maria Richards, honorary archivist at the Mater Hospital in Crows Nest, who edited and helped to research Sr Cecily’s tribute to her aunt’s work at the Mater, Auntie Paul, the story of Sister Mary Paul Geary RSM.

Sr Paul was the hospital’s administrator from 1921 to 1937.

Her niece decided to write the book in 2001 after the merger of the Mater Hospital with St Vincent’s Hospital, Darlinghurst, run by the Sisters of Charity.

Copies of Auntie Paul; the story of Sister Mary Paul Geary RSM can be ordered by calling Maria Richards on 9955 6253 or 0411 478 554. Cost is $25 plus postage.
