New textbooks win praise from schools, parents

Lucille Nobleza, teacher’s aide at St Catherine Laboure Primary, and year 3 student Mitchell Rutar discuss their school’s project – recreating the covers of the new religious education textbooks

By Therese Spruhan

‘Comprehensive’, ‘colourful’ and ‘easy to use’ – that’s how teachers are describing To Know, Worship and Love, the new Religious Education curriculum and textbooks which were introduced in Years 3 to 10 this year.

Donna Bennett, acting religious education co-ordinator at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College, Kensington, says To Know, Worship and Love is having a very positive impact.

“We have a staff of 22 on the religious education team,” she says. Some are new to the school, but all “feel very supported in their teaching because the new program is very detailed and the textbooks are great resources. It is a very comprehensive curriculum ... easy to follow and easy to apply to different audiences”.

Each section of the new curriculum contains scripture and doctrine references, background information on the scripture passages, information on the Church’s teaching and traditions, links with students’ life experience, and suggested teaching and learning strategies.

There is a sample teaching strategy and assessment, prayer and liturgical examples, as well as suggested reading and other resources.
