Recently a panel of TV talkers was discussing what was news ... their chattering centred on the death of a cricketer that had been, making the headlines.

Which got me to thinking of an incident in my own life as a newsman.

In 63 years as a journalist serving Catholic papers and magazines and on secular weeklies and dailies, I’ve had some interest in the subject of news.

But what stands out in my memory was a lesson given sometime after I had joined The Catholic Weekly and was serving as news/sub editor.

It was a change after ambulance chasing, fire engine following, police roundsman probing – even coroners’ inquests into murders. My last job had been as editor of a country weekly and it could be said that seeking the newsworthy was my habit.
