La Perouse remembers Fr Receveur

La Perouse may have been the site of the first Mass in Australia – a funeral Mass for Fr Laurent Receveur. More than 300 people were at memorial Mass pictured above

More than 300 people gathered in front of the French Museum at La Perouse for the annual Mass to honour the memory of Pere (Fr) Laurent Receveur.

He was a young Conventual Franciscan priest and scientist with the La Perouse expedition, which sailed into Botany Bay on January 26, 1788.

Pere Receveur had been wounded and almost lost an eye six weeks earlier when he was in a shore ;party which came under attack in Samoa.

He died in Botany Bay on February 17, 1788, and was buried at La Perouse.

French-speaking Catholics, Franciscans and parishioners of St Andrew's Church, Malabar, were among worshippers at the memorial Mass, which took place near where the first Mass in Australia was probably celebrated.
