ACU National says ‘no’ to HECS fee rise

The Australian Catholic University (ACU National) is going against the trend by deciding not to increase fees for its HECS liable students at its six campuses across the country in 2005.

ACU National’s Senate endorsed its recommendations to maintain the student contribution level for 2005 at the same level as the published HECS bands in all subjects, citing the university’s strong commitment to equity and social justice for the decision.

Under the Federal Government’s Higher Education Reform package, the university could have increased fees to a maximum of 25 per cent.

ACU National vice-chancellor Professor Peter Sheehan says the university is subject to the same financial pressures as other universities which have announced large fee increases.

However, it has decided that at this stage it would work harder to develop additional sources of income rather than impose further financial burdens on students in order for them to get the education they deserved.
