ACU honours Bishop Robinson

HONESTY, COMPASSION: Bishop Geoffrey Robinson is flanked by the Australian Catholic University chancellor, Br Julian McDonald (left), and vice-chancellor, Prof Peter Sheehan, after receiving the university’s highest award

The Australian Catholic University (ACU National) has awarded its highest honour to Bishop Geoffrey Robinson, auxiliary bishop of Sydney, for his work in the development and maintenance of professional standards in ministry and in the Towards Healing process of responding to victims of abuse.

ACU National’s vice-chancellor, Prof Peter Sheehan, says the award – Doctor of the University honoris causa – recognises the work undertaken by Bishop Robinson in dealing with issues of professional standards within the Church.

“He has laboured with great sensitivity, honesty and compassion to assist those affected by sexual abuse within the Australian Church,” said Prof Sheehan.

“Leadership in the area of professional standards has been as important and necessary as it has been challenging and painful.

“To this task Bishop Robinson has brought wisdom, courage, compassion and faithfulness. It is not just this area, however, which illustrates great achievement.
