A SHORE THING: The Joeys 1st VIII just fails in its bid to pip Shore over the final metres of the GPS Head of the River at Penrith Lakes By Erin Tennant It was the halfway mark at the Head of the River, the high point of the Greater Public Schools rowing season, and St Joseph’s 1st VIII was now putting the heat on the two crews ahead – Shore and King’s. The Joey’s VIII had been beating King’s all season, but pulling in the Shore crew, who were a good boat length in front of the pack, was always going to be tough. “We knew that Shore would start quickly and it would be a matter of pulling them in later in the race,” said Justin Quigley, St Joseph’s captain of boats and the No 7 seat in the school’s VIII. “Our plan was to put the pressure on after 800 metres.” The eight-man crew from Joey’s had been following a strict training regime of at least four rows per week since the start of summer.
