SMALL BEGINNINGS: Gizo’s new education resource centre

By Chris Lindsay

The Sydney archdiocesan Catholic Education Office has linked with the Gizo diocese in the Solomon Islands in a bid to put that beleaguered country’s Catholic education system back on its feet.

And the first step has been to fund and construct an education resource centre in the diocese along with assistance from Marist Asia Pacific Solidarity and Ausaid, the Australian Government’s overseas aid agency.

The centre will provide support for local schools in areas such as curriculum, teacher development, leadership developments, teaching and learning resources development and religious education.

The Sydney Catholic Education Office has provided curriculum software on CD and given permission for it to be edited to suit local conditions. As facilities improve, more information and assistance will be sent via the internet.

The centre is not restricted to the Catholic community; it offers full participation and service to all schools and teachers.
