Pope still favourite of young Catholics

Pope John Paul II is almost lost in a sea of waving hands and beaming young faces during a celebration with tens of thousands of young people in St Peter’s Square.

The Pope at 83 is proving to be as popular now with youth as he has been during his pontificate. He is said to be invigorated when he is in the presence of the young.

One young Polish woman raced forward to embrace the Pontiff during the rally. The gathering also featured young dancers.

The Pope told the jubilant gathering to “live as true Christians”.
