As an old boy, Lance Brooks was already proud of St Patrick’s College, Strathfield. Now, as founder of the charity Communities for Communities, he has 1500 more reasons to be proud of it. That’s how many dollars students at his old school have raised for the charity at an open day. Tim Lennon, the college’s social justice co-ordinator, said that he was amazed at how students had got behind Communities for Communities, which is also known as C4C. “I think (it is) an excellent model, the way one community having fun can support another one,” he said. “Rather than blindly giving money away, it actually supports two communities and you get twice as much benefit.” The charity’s latest fundraising event, an advance screening of Finding Nemo, was a success with residents of Canada Bay filling three movie theatres. Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas, who attended the screening with his two daughters, said: “Communities for Communities is a great cause and I am happy to support Lance in trying to better the lives of others”. Lance, a parishioner at All Hallows, Five Dock, Canada Bay’s citizen of the year and a former Australian Survivor contestant, says the charity’s primary purpose is about “experiencing community, coming together and having a sense of belonging”. It supports the children of Ranong, a village on the Thai-Burma border.
