The 43 students honoured this year with an Archbishop of Sydney Award for student excellence have “a strong commitment to their Catholic life” and “a passion and practical commitment to social justice activities both within their schools and in the wider community”, says the Archbishop, Dr George Pell. “They are outstanding young Christian leaders whose efforts and achievements are always underpinned by a great faith commitment and a love of their God and their fellow human beings,” he said at a ceremony in St Mary’s Cathedral. The 43 Year 12 students, who were nominated by their schools, were presented with their awards by the archbishop. Dr Pell said that while the students’ achievements in academic, artistic and sporting areas were acknowledged, the awards also recognised personal qualities such as gener-osity, compassion, courage, enthusiasm and participation in school life. “Not all recipients were necessarily high achievers in everything they attempted, but all were characterised by a determination to become involved, to strive for their personal best, and to live life to the full,” he said. “They have shown great leadership qualities and have been responsible for instituting significant student initiatives at their schools for the benefit of their fellow students.” Jan Foley, principal of Brigidine College, Rand-wick, says vice-captain Tracey Allen has a strong sense of social justice and actively bears witness to Gospel ideals. “Tracey has worked on the St Vincent de Paul team and has been involved in fundraising and community events,” said Mrs Foley. “She holds the Duke of Edinburgh gold award, has represented in water polo at state level and uses her energy and talent to help others.” Tracey is “a young woman of integrity and good will”. Jane Donovan, principal of Aquinas College, Menai, says Andrew Hurst, a “young man of integrity whose actions consistently embody the core beliefs of our school mission statement”, is admired in the school and parish comm-unity “for his selfless approach to service and his commitment to all aspects of college life”, she said. “He is a member of our college leadership group, a Eucharistic minister at school and in the parish, an outstanding student academically and a role model to all students. “His good humour and generosity of spirit ensure that he is respected by teachers and students at the college.” The winners of the award are as follows: Jennifer Slaviero, All Saints Catholic Senior College, Casula; Andrew Hurst, Aquinas College, Menai; Stefanie Lia, Bethany College, Hurstville; Meegan Lea, Bethlehem College, Ashfield; Tracey Allen, Brigidine College, Randwick; Michael Ormerod, Casimir Catholic College, Marrickville; Joseph Consalvi, Christian Brothers High School, Lewisham; Joseph Fakhr, De La Salle College, Ashfield; Gabrielle Carroll, De La Salle College, Cronulla; Vanessa Sheppard, Domremy College, Five Dock; Paul Vukaši, Freeman Catholic College, Bonnyrigg Heights; Jay Karutz, Holy Cross College, Ryde; Michelle Vu, Holy Spirit College, Lakemba; Kate Barrington, Kincoppal-Rose Bay; Matthew Gauci, LaSalle Catholic College, Bankstown; Ellen Stephen, Loreto, Kirribilli; Christopher Jenkins, Marcellin College, Randwick; Tony Youssef, Marist College, Eastwood; Mitchell Greatorex, Marist College, Kogarah; Kyle Linahan, Marist College, North Shore; Gregory Jennings, Marist College, Pagewood; Prudence Roscoe, Marist Sisters’ College, Woolwich; Thuy Tran Huynh, Mary MacKillop College, Wakeley; Bernadette Gemmell, Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College, North Sydney; Mary Ryan, Mount St Joseph, Milperra, Sara Randall, Our Lady ofthe Sacred Heart College, Kensington; Steven Catanzariti, Patrician Brothers’ College, Fairfield; Katie Elliott, Rosebank College, Five Dock; Raffaella Volpicella, Santa Sabina College, Strathfield; Timothy Karbowiak, St Aloysius’ College, Milsons Point; Charbel Bejjani, St Charbel’s College, Punchbowl; Antonia Bonello, St Clare’s College, Waverley; William Sheehy, St Ignatius’ College Riverview; Lisa Pemberton, St John Bosco College, Engadine; Camden Gilchrist, St Joseph’s College, Hunters Hill; Thomas Pacey, St Mary’s Cathedral College, Sydney; Matthew Morgan, St Patrick’s College, Strathfield; Elizabeth Café, St Patrick’s College, Sutherland; Melissa Stanton, St Scholastica’s College, Glebe; Cara Benedet, St Ursula’s College, Kingsgrove; Hannah Mahy, St Vincent’s College, Potts Point; Nouhad Khoury, Trinity Catholic College, Auburn; Milton Micallef, Waverley College, Our Lady’s Mount.
