Board short bonanza for Vinnies

Vinnies president John O’Neill and MP Jackie Kelly with some of the shorts

A Sydney importer has opted to help disadvantaged children in Fiji rather than see $40,000 worth of rejected clothing destroyed.

About 1500 pairs of brand new board shorts that fell short of the importer’s specification would have been destroyed but for his goodwill.

In the past rejected imports or goods that have not complied with counterfeit laws have been destroyed to protect the names and image of companies concerned.

Federal MP Jackie Kelly, who presented the shorts from the anonymous donor to Vinnies State president John O’Neill, said the regulations had been changed in the early 1990s through the efforts of John Howard - then Opposition Leader, to enable better use of such rejected or seized goods.

Mr O’Neill said: “It seems quite immoral that perfectly useful goods might be destroyed when charities such as the St Vincent de Paul Society can arrange for the goods to help disadvantaged people.

“We encourage all importers of consumer goods to consider this generous option in preference to goods being destroyed.

“In this instance, we have the assistance of the Royal Australian Navy in delivering these goods to our people in Fiji where they will be applied to assist people in need.”
