Dedication Mass

The cathedral in the final stages of reconstruction

The Bishop of Parramatta, Bishop Kevin Manning, will preside at the dedication Mass for St Patrick’s Cathedral at 10.30am on Saturday, November 29.

Pope John Paul II has appointed Cardinal Edward Cassidy as his special envoy to the Mass, which will be concelebrated by Cardinal Edward Clancy, Cardinal George Pell, Bishop Manning, Australia’s archbishops and bishops, and priests of the Parramatta diocese.

The cathedral was destroyed by fire on February 19, 1996. MGT Architects was commissioned the following year to restore the original church as the Blessed Sacrament chapel and create a new cathedral accommodating 800.

The cathedral complex includes a cloister, which joins the cathedral to the parish hall, and historic Murphy House (reputedly the only Catholic presbytery named in honour of an assistant priest).

Three musical works have been commissioned for the opening - a Mass setting, Light of the Nations, by Fr Chris Willcock, an Australian Jesuit living in Melbourne; Lord God in the Simplicity of My Heart, by Paul Stanhope; and Praise the Lord Jerusalem, by Paul Witney.

Bishop Manning has commissioned a program of major works of art by artists working in different media - Sydney sculptor Anne Ferguson working in stone, Tasmanian design/maker Kevin Perkins working in timber, and Sydney sculptor and jewellery designer Robin Blau working in metal.

The Pontifical Mission at the dedication Mass will consist of:

• Cardinal Edward Idris Cassidy, former president of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity;

• Mons Francisco Padilla, counsellor of the Apostolic Nuncio;

• Fr John Boyle, parish priest at Our Lady of Lourdes, Seven Hills; and

• Fr Peter Blayney, judicial vicar of the diocese of Parramatta.
