Yell! For fresh tunes

Catholic Youth Services, Sydney, is planning a Catholic song writing contest to bolster the choice of music for liturgies and youth ministry.

The aim of the competition - known as Yell! - is to attract fresh music that appeals to young people especially.

Linda Cox, of Catholic Youth Services, says: “A lot of parishes use Protestant-based music, which is fine to a certain degree, but the lyrics miss out on the richness ofthe Catholic faith, and some of it is not appropriate for use in Catholic liturgies.

“Music is one of the most powerful tools for evangelisation that we have, so if we can direct the talents of Catholic musicians to parish youth ministry through this competition it will be worth it.”

Entries will be sought from June and winners will be announced at a concert in November.

The winning songs will be recorded on a CD with a booklet containing lyrics, and made available to Catholic parishes, schools, and other organisations and groups.

Catholic Youth Services is looking for sponsors to provide financial support or prizes for the competition. Call 02 9665 5344.
