Young train as catechists

Young people gave up their weekend to train as catechists

Sydney’s Vietnamese Catholic Community is serious about training its catechists, and they are serious about getting trained, too.

That’s why 150 young people aged between 19-33 volunteered to give up their weekend to spend it in their parish, St Luke’s Parish, Revesby.

They made up two groups: those who will work with adults who want to become Catholic through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, and those who will lead the children’s sessions each Sunday.

Vietnamese chaplain Fr Paul Van Chi Chu and a pastoral team of priests, lay ministers and religious sisters (Missionary Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of the World) ledthe eager young people in prayer, discussion and mock catechetical sessions.

Good Samaritan Sr Elizabeth Brennan, from the Liturgy Office at Lidcombe, also worked with them over two days.

She emphasised the role of the catechist as one who gives a full and robust proclamation of the Word of God that invites a response in faith, charity and justice.

The Vietnamese community sang its faith with hymns and mantras during the weekend.
