Christian ideals can 'guide us to share'

Lent is approaching and that means Shrove (or Pancake) Tuesday is too, time to heat up the griddle and get out some maple syrup.

The tradition of scoffing pancakes on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday sprang from the need to use up the indulgences and perishables such as flour, eggs, butter and sugar, making it easier to abstain from goodies during the six-week Lenten season.

Caritas Australia's Project Compassion boxes have become a time-honoured Lenten tradition, too.

This year Caritas is launching its major fund-raising campaign nationally on Shrove Tuesday, March 4.

The theme for this years' Project Compassion is Freedom from Slavery, inspired by the words of the prophet Isaiah fulfilled in Jesus: "He has sent me to proclaim release to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free" (Luke 4:18).

The national director of Caritas Australia, Jack de Groot, says: "Caritas Australia calls on the Australian community to respond compassionately during Lent to the needs of impoverished communities worldwide.

"The Christian ideals embodied in Lent can guide us to share withpeople around the world regardless of race, political beliefs, religion or gender."

As part of this year's Project Compassion campaign, Thelma Rosario, assistant director of Caritas Development Institute, the training and research centre of Caritas Bangladesh, and Peter Meduka, executive secretary of Caritas Tanzania, will visit Australia this month.

Project Compassion provides Australians with an opportunity to support development programs throughout the world and enables Caritas Australia to respond with relief aid to poorcountries in times of crisis.

Last year Project Compassion raised more than $6 million, making it one of Australia's largest public fundraising campaigns for overseas aid and development.

PANCAKES: GET READY FOR A JAM (AND CREAM) SESSION

Have a pre-penance pancake pig-out this Tuesday, March 4 (Shrove Tuesday):

Combine a cup of flour with a cup of milk and a pinch of salt

Add two tablespoons of melted butter and two whisked eggs and mix until well blended

For each pancake, spoon a tablespoon of the mixture on to a hot greased frypan and flip it over when bubbles appear. Then cook for another minute

Serve in stacks with jam and cream or lemon and sugar.
