Bishops’ Meeting: Concern over humanitarian impact of war

Australia’s bishops have expressed gratitude to those people who gave so generously to appeals organised to help the people of Iraq recover from the recent conflict in their country.

Noting that they were meeting in the shadow of the war, they stressed the Church’s concern for the humanitarian impact of the war.

Caritas Australia has already provided $280,000 in emergency aid for Iraq, with much of it going towards the purchase of medical aid and equipment. More than $140,000 has been raised in the special appeal set up to respond to the situation.

The Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Francesco Canalini, addressing the opening session of the plenary meeting, said the Australian bishops’ solidarity with Pope John Paul’s efforts to avoid conflict in Iraq had given a clear message of the Church’s concern for the human dimension in war.

In their discussions, the bishops also considered ways of supporting the Christian communities of Iraq and the Middle East.
