Students chip in $9000 for Caritas

Student leaders at Patrician Brothers College, Fairfield, present a cheque or $9000 to Mrs Patricia Burke, archdiocesan director of Caritas, for Project Compassion

Students at Patrician Brothers College, Fairfield, have raised more than $60,000 in just six years for Caritas Australia’s annual fundraising appeal.

This year they were no less generous, taking time out from helping with the college’s golden jubilee celebrations to donate $9000 for Project Compassion during Lent.

Student leaders presented the cheque to Mrs Patricia Burke, the archdiocesan director of Caritas, during a recent assembly at the school.

Mr Kevin Griffiths, the Fairfield college’s relgious education co-ordinator, said that the students and staff put regular small donations in Project Compassion boxes during homeroom time.

Boxes were also placed outside the canteen and in the school chapel to remind the students to go without treats, and to add almsgiving to their prayer.

Their donation shows the “tremendous generosity of the students and their families”, he said.
