New ambassador to Vatican

Pope John Paul II has received Dr John Herron as Australia’s new Ambassador to the Holy See, telling him that solidarity with developing nations is a “laudable trait of your people”.

Australia’s involvement in peace-keeping missions, its generous aid assistance and its support of East Timor speak well of its desire to contribute to the international security and stability necessary for authentic social and economic advancement, the Pope said, adding that it had an opportunity to become an increasingly important agent for peace.

Dr Herron is a former minister in the Howard Government and chairman of the Senate Community Affairs Committee.

He is a former Queensland branch president of the AMA and former Queensland chairman of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Association of Surgeons.
